Toploader Co started in a spare bedroom in 2019, surrounded by half-opened boxes of penny sleeves, mismatched toploaders, and a stack of graded slabs that never quite fit in any of the cases we'd bought. What began as a personal spreadsheet to track which card savers actually protected our own collection turned into the site you're reading now.
Who We Are
Toploader Co is run by a small team of lifelong collectors and competitive players with backgrounds spanning Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, sports cards, and Yu-Gi-Oh. Our founder, Marcus Webb, started collecting baseball cards as a kid in the 90s and never really stopped — he just added a few more games along the way. He's joined by Priya Anand, a former card shop employee who spent years watching customers ask 'which sleeve won't scratch my foils?', and Dez Ruiz, who handles our testing lab and has an unreasonably large drawer of discontinued binders 'for reference purposes.'
None of us work for a card manufacturer, a grading company, or a sleeve brand. We buy our own products, we play with our own decks, and we get frustrated by the same flimsy zippers and warped toploaders that you do.
Why We Started This Site
The idea for Toploader Co came from a simple, recurring problem: every accessory brand claims to be 'ultra clear,' 'archival safe,' and 'the best on the market,' but almost none of them publish real data on thickness, rigidity, UV resistance, or how a product performs after six months of actual use. We were tired of buying binders that yellowed within a year and sleeves that fit some cards but split at the seams on others.
So we started testing everything ourselves, writing down what we found, and sharing it publicly. What began as a hobby blog with a dozen readers has grown into a resource used by collectors, LGS owners, and tournament players who want honest answers before they spend money on gear meant to protect cards worth far more than the accessories themselves.
How We Review Products
Every review on Toploader Co follows the same process, regardless of how big or small the brand is:
- We buy the product ourselves. We do not accept free units in exchange for coverage, and any rare exception is always disclosed clearly at the top of the article.
- We test for real-world use, not just specs. That means loading toploaders with actual thick cards, cycling binder pages hundreds of times, checking sleeve fit against multiple card stocks, and leaving products under light exposure to check for yellowing over weeks, not minutes.
- We compare against a control group. New products are measured against accessories we already know well, so our ratings stay consistent across reviews instead of drifting based on whatever we tested most recently.
- We check for card safety first. Rigidity, static buildup, PVC content, seam quality, and closure security are non-negotiable factors — a product that looks nice but risks damaging cards will never score well with us, no matter how it photographs.
- We revisit old reviews. Packaging changes, factories change, and quality can drift. When readers flag an issue with a product we've previously recommended, we retest it and update the article rather than leaving outdated advice online.
What Makes Us Trustworthy
We know that anyone can put up a review site, so we try to earn trust the boring, consistent way:
- Transparent methodology on every review, including how long we tested and what we tested against.
- Clear disclosure of affiliate links, which help fund the products we buy for testing, without letting those partnerships influence our ratings.
- No pay-for-placement reviews, ever. If a brand's product is mediocre, we say so.
- Real photos of the actual units we tested, including wear and defects, not just manufacturer stock images.
- A willingness to say 'we were wrong' when new information or a bad batch changes our opinion on a product.
Toploader Co exists because we care about the same thing you do: keeping the cards we love in the best possible condition, without falling for marketing claims that don't hold up once the packaging comes off. Thanks for reading, and welcome to the site.
